What is orthopaedic mattress?
An "orthopaedic" mattress is designed to benefit the whole body and provide a restful, comfortable sleep, so that the owner wakes refreshed with no aches and pains. These mattresses support the body fully and reduce stress on the back, neck, and joints by alleviating pressure points. This provides a high level of comfort and avoids stiffness upon waking.
An orthopaedic mattress has springs with a spring gauge of 12.5. A 12.5 gauge is the firmest spring used in mattresses, where the thickness of the coiled springs used in the wire is 1.94mm. 12.5 gauge springs are the most durable, with a greatly increased lifespan. There are also orthopaedic mattresses made from special foam that do not contain springs, but still provide the same "orthopaedic" qualities as those with springs.
